Welcome to BackYard Designs. Being a start up business we thought it would be a good idea to introduce the founder and tell you a little bit about BYD! So, this story all begins with a passionate 20 something year old, Hayley.

Hayley has always been creative. As a child, every October she would make her bedroom “Out Of Bounds” to her family so she could create a mini Santa’s grotto making everyone’s Christmas presents. This love for making grew and she decided to undertake a degree in 3D Design at The University of Brighton. After graduating Hayley went on to work as a Product Designer for a couple of companies, building up her experience, not only as a designer working with big clients, but also with running a business.

“I have always strived to start up my own business later in life. Back in June 2017 I was unexpectedly made redundant. I am sure everyone has been in that position before and it really puts life into perspective. There is never a “right” time to start a business but becoming unemployed really gave me that push to succeed. Since then I have worked with my dad fitting kitchens during the day and building the business at night.

With my previous experience working for a laser cutting company, I saw the untapped, unimaginable possibilities laser cutting can offer. Unfortunately for me, the top end machine which would allow me to cut intricate designs on beautiful materials, came with a large price tag. During the last six months I have worked tirelessly, securing a large loan and business mentor from the Prince’s Trust.”

Hayley loves the outdoors and nature, but her biggest love is her allotment and chickens. All of BYD’s products are designed by Hayley with her botanical influences filtering through. Her concept is to capture the beauty of nature and bring it inside for people to enjoy, whatever the weather.
